Introduction
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
What is your world view? Does it determine how you would finish the following sentence?
“In the beginning...”
Throughout the world, there is a common scientific opinion regarding the universe which is held by leading intellectuals from all nationalities, regardless of ethnic, political or religious background and belief.
That opinion is - within the universe there is law and order.
Remove this assumption and science is dead.
Everywhere we look, whether we look outwards through the telescope at the vastness of the solar system, our galaxy and beyond into infinitude, or in contrast, we look inwards at the microscopic world of atoms, molecules, particles and DNA; we see law and order. On this point, leading intellectuals across all the main disciplines of science, agree.
Take planet earth as an example; it is just the right distance from the sun to maintain the precise conditions required to sustain essential elements, like carbon, water and oxygen, which are fundamental to life. Too close to the sun - we would burn; too far away - we would freeze.
The moon orbits earth, while simultaneously, earth orbits the sun in synchronised perpetual motion at just the right distance and speed to maintain equilibrium.
Earth rotates on its own axis at precisely the right angle to maintain the regeneration of essential elements and the resulting seasons within our calendar year.
Regarding this commonly agreed assumption of law and order within the universe; Professor John C Lennox expresses it succinctly when he refers to -
“The intelligibility of the Universe.”
And so, the question must be addressed; how was the universe formed? Does this perpetual system of law and order stem from chaos in the form of a random ‘Big Bang’? Or is it the expression of an intelligent creator who not only created the universe but who also actively sustains it?
Ironically, in contrast to this law and order, much of the chaos that we see in our world, is the direct result of human intervention or the indirect consequence of the fall of man.
