Hebrew alphabet - 22 days in Psalm 119
Robert Murray M'Cheyne (Scotland: 1813-1843) in his annual bible reading plan, divided the reading of this Psalm over seven days in preference to a single reading.
W. Graham Scroggie quotes the following scholars; M'Cheyne "a sweetly monotonous meditation", Maclaren "there is music in its monotony, which is subtly varied", Spurgeon "it equally excels in breadth and thought, depth of meaning and height of fervour", Augustine "it seemeth not to need an expositor, but only a reader and listener". W. Graham Scroggie, Psalms, Pickering & Inglis, page 187.
Psalm 119 is an acrostic Psalm; it is divided into 22 portions sub-titled by the individual letters of the Hebrew alphabet with each of the portions comprised of 8 verses. I must confess that I have read this Psalm many times and wondered why it was so long, but this mistaken notion was transformed through reading the notes by W Graham Scroggie.
I wanted to pass on a simple but effective way to read, understand and appreciate this wonderful Psalm. As an addition to or a variation of your daily reading, may I suggest that you set aside a few minutes to read one portion of this Psalm each day over a period of 22 days in line with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. By doing this you can focus on a small portion and meditate on just 8 verses at a time. I have planned to do this commencing 1 July 2020; why not join me wherever you are?
