I Am

Astonishing - Unique claims of Jesus

The Lord Jesus made some astonishing claims when he lived on earth. The Gospel of John has recorded some of these statements in detail.

John focuses on the connection between Jesus and the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses. God revealed himself to Moses as “I am.”

The claim that Jesus is the Messiah

John 4 v 25-26

The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’ Then Jesus declared ‘I who speak to you am he.’

I Am 2

The claim that Jesus is THE Bread of Life

John 6 v 35

I am THE bread of life, he who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6 v 48

I am THE bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert yet they died. But there is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.

I Am 3

The claim that Jesus is THE Light of the World

John 8 v 12

I am THE light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

The claim that Jesus is THE Gate

John 10 v 7- 10

I tell you the truth, I am THE gate for the sheep... I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.

The claim that Jesus is THE Good Shepherd

John 10 v 11-18

I am THE good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.... I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep.

The claim that Jesus is THE Resurrection and the Life

John 11 v 25

I am THE resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

I Am 4

The claim that Jesus is THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life

John 14 v 6-7

I am THE way and THE truth and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

The claim that Jesus was God

John 10 v 30

I and the Father are one... he who has seen me has seen the Father.

The Supremacy of the Son of God

Colossians 1 v 15-23

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

There can be no doubt that these are fabulous claims for a man to make! No one else has ever made all of these claims.

What do we make of these claims? We need to decide whether be believe them or not. If these claims are true, and I for one certainly believe that they are, one and all; then we need to consider the implications.

If Jesus is who He claimed to be - the eternal Son of God, the Saviour of mankind; then we need to face the fact that either I am going to accept Him as my Saviour, or I am going to reject his claims and 'take my chances' when I meet Almighty God - His Father.

Christ died for the ungodly. He came to seek and to save that which was lost. He died for you on a wooden cross at Calvary. Will you trust Him to save you? Will you accept Him as your personal Saviour? If not, you are rejecting Him and His offer of Salvation.
